Set on the shores of Lough Ree, just a few miles from Athlone, Ray Byrne and Jane English’s Wineport Lodge is truly an oasis in a gastronomic desert.
The accommodation is superb. Ten good-sized bedrooms, all with stunning views overlooking the lake, which you can view whilst laying on your bed, as if you were sailing in a barge. Big bathrooms and all the creature comforts you could wish for, in your stay are there, (plasma screen TV, Occitane toiletries, Bose radio and CD player – with a choice of CD’s to play, bathrobes etc.) with some extras available at a fairly hefty price. This little bit of commercialism is perhaps the only fly in the ointment of this near perfect haven of rest, but since it is only optional you can easily sit back (or even lay back) and thoroughly enjoy what is on offer within the room rate. The rooms were only opened in 2002, so there is still an air of clean modernity about them.
Breakfast is good with good choices for the calorie counters as well as normal people, if perhaps some of the materials used (juices in particular) are not first class. Service all round is excellent.
