Jürgen Hoffmann...

The Hoffmann family started doing their own thing in 1991 and 1.3 hectares of vines have now grown into seven. Alois Hoffmann started off this adventure and son Jürgen is now carrying the banner, ably assisted by his wife and sister. The estate consists of about 60% of white wine grapes and 40% red wine. White grapes (Müller-Thurgau, Bacchus, Riesling and Silvaner) are all fermented and matured in stainless steel whilst the reds (Spätburgunder and Tauberschwarz) see 12 to 18 months in local German oak barrels.

Flint 2005 - 11.5% abv.
This is the Hoffmann's entry level wine - a blend of all four white wine grape varietals on their estate, producing a crisp, easy-drinking wine for early consumption. 83pts.

Silvaner Kabinett 2005 - 11% abv.
Crisp and fresh again, but a good deal more acidity here and a bit on the light side. 81pts.

Silvaner Spätlese 2005 - 12% abv.
Just bottled and a little bit volatile, so can't really rate it yet. NR.

Edition 2005 (50% Riesling, 50% Silvaner) -
12.5% abv.
This is Spätlese quality wine made from a maximum yield of 50hl/ha. Nice balance of fruit and acidity. Edition is a common label produced by a number of the best growers in the Tauberfranken region, but not necessarily with the same blend of grapes. Each to his own - some of them are red. This one 86pts.

Riesling Kabinett 2005 - 11.5% abv.
There is nice flinty elegance here, a little on the light side but with good complexity. 88pts.

Riesling 3 sterne 2005 - 12.5% abv.
Even better with good minerality and more fullness in the mouth. Starred wines must be min. Spätlese. 90pts.

Riesling Sankt Martin 2005 - 12.5% abv.
Fairly high sugar levels - full flavoured and full in the mouth but lacking a bit of crispness. 86pts.

Tauberschwarz trocken 2004 - 13% abv.
18 months in lightly toasted new oak. Good red berry fruit but still masked a little by the wood. 84pts.

Spätburgunder "R" 2004 - 13.5% abv.
18 months in oak again, but this time it's 50% Allier and 50 % local. There is typical caramelly German Pinot Noir fruit and fair complexity and the wood is much better integrated than in the Tauberschwarz. 86pts.

Gerald Poth...

Gerald Poth came to show us some of his wines whilst we were at dinner at the Hotel Victoria in Bad Mergentheim, so we didn't get a chance to visit his winery, but this gave us a superb opportunity to taste the wines with food. The family have been producing wine since 1920 and in the early eighties production became organic.

Sekt 2002
Made from 100% Traminer grapes, this was a very perfumed and elegant wine with nice off-dry flavours on the palate and no spiciness. 84pts.

Edition 2005
The same common label referred to in the Hoffmann review, but in this instance, the blend is 65% Riesling, 29% Silvaner and 6% Traminer. A relatively complex finish rounded off this softish wine which was an easy drink. 86pts.

Schwartzriesling 2003
This is 100% from the grape also known as Pinot Meunier, one of the main components in many a Champagne. Here, however, the grapes are left on their skins to produce a soft and supple red wine with a fair amount of upfront fruit. 88pts.
