Peterstone Court
Peterstone Court is an old Manor House situated on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, which was restored some years ago by one of the local Water Companies as a watering hole (appropriately) for their executives. It has twelve beautifully proportioned and spacious bedrooms, great public rooms and a friendly kitchen. In fact, they like to call themselves a “Country House Hotel and Bistro”. The hotel was recently purchased by Sean Gerrard, and Glyn and Jessica Bridgeman, who together operate the highly successful Nantyffin Cider Mill gastro-pub and the Manor Hotel, both at nearby Crickhowell. More about these another time.

Apart from the huge function room which is used for local up-market weddings, the core of the hotel is its bistro. There is no restaurant as such, although the bistro is a restaurant in all but name, but you can also get substantial bar snacks at the bar.

The quality of the cuisine has taken a quantum leap forward since chef Daniel James* arrived. He cooks a short, modern menu of mainly local, organically-farmed meats and poultry at very reasonable prices and to enhance the informality of the whole place, you can have your starters in either an “ample” or “generous” size. Our dish of caramelised king scallops were a little overcooked, but the seared foie gras was perfect. Main courses of lamb and sea bass were also cooked a little past what we would have liked, but a subsequent visit produced a lovely starter of lamb kebab (five very light shasliks of lamb with a refreshing cucumber salad) and a Medallion of local beef with a light “Cassoulet” of beans and mange-tout. All were accompanied with a delicate sauce made from the pan juices and the meat itself cooked just as ordered. A short list of desserts showed sound and competent preparation.
*Note Daniel James is now gone! Updated review ASAP.
...The wine list is relatively short (about 90 bins) but covers a whole gamut of styles and flavours from around the world. In fact, the list is helpfully arranged by style ranging from light dry whites to full-bodied reds. Prices are very reasonable for the quality. House wines from France, Italy and Australia start at £13.50 and go up to £89.50 for the 1997 Insignia from Joseph Phelps, which is remarkable since this bottle retails for over £100. Don’t be afraid to go for the top of the list. As far as restaurant prices go, they are a bargain.

This is definitely a place that is getting better and better.
