Kelly's Resort and Hotel
This famous hotel has been an icon of Irish hospitality for over 50 years and is still going strong under the new generation of Kelly’s. A buzz of anticipation is perceptible on arrival, which augurs well. The hotel is laid out in a rather complex way and it takes a little time to discover all the goodies that are available to the guest. Two restaurants, three bars, a sports centre, ample lounges and seating areas are dotted around the place and all are spacious and comfortable.

The bedrooms are large enough with comfortable beds and satellite TV and the bathrooms are spacious with good facilities. Service is excellent. A problem with our shower was fixed speedily during the course of an evening and the hotel acknowledged our inconvenience, by not charging us the normally compulsory 10% service charge for the room.

Cooked breakfasts are not normally served before 8:30, which makes it inconvenient for those wishing to take the nine o’clock ferry to Fishguard, but special arrangements can be made to get a cooked breakfast at 7:50, although a continental breakfast can be had at an earlier time. You need to order your breakfast the night before in these cases, which means you can’t change your mind about anything and you do have to bolt your food in order to arrive at the ferry check-in on time. Still, this is a small price to pay for what is generally a very convivial and amenable stay.

And, mentioning prices, there are a number of all-inclusive packages, which the hotel encourages you to take. These include three meals a day, tea, music, and various activities, but probably not enough time for the sports activities you will need to work off the excesses of overindulgence. Of, course, you can just book B & B, and eat in either of the two restaurants –

...the more formal Beaches or the more casual La Marine – the difference is one of style rather than quality.

In summary, this is a splendid introduction to Irish hospitality (or a fond farewell to it) if you are either arriving, or leaving the Emerald Isle at Rosslare. Long may it continue.
