Aberaeron’s harbour, on Cardigan Bay in West Wales, competes with many a continental fishing village in ‘picturesqueness’, and the fact that nearly all the staff at this hotel are Welsh speaking, makes one feel that one might be abroad after all.

This is a plus point for your average London townie, made all the more picturesque by Glyn and Menna Heulyn’s tasteful conversion of this old harbourside grotty pub into a modern, up-market small hotel geared to the needs of both the locals and the tourists alike.

On a fine summer’s evening, the bar was heaving with locals and the residents of the seven bedrooms joined in before sitting down to dinner in the contemporary styled restaurant. You can see ...

My accommodation can be described as ‘compact’ and was probably not designed for someone who is fat, but all mod. cons. are available in the room – a comfortable bed, TV, radio, central heating, good lighting and all the little extras you might expect from an establishment of class. And, of course, the view across the harbour was stunning. Double rooms are much larger and there is also a cottage with two rooms in it, which you can hire separately or take over the whole cottage at a reduced rate.

On a second visit we stayed in the suite, which was nicely and contemporarily furnished, but there are a number of caveats. It’s not really for you if you are (a) tall (it’s located in the eaves of the house so you are banging your head against the beams – even if you are not tall)

...Or, (b) weak (it’s three stories up a narrow winding staircase which makes schlepping your cases up and down more than a little tiresome). Or (c) lazy (we like watching the TV in bed, but you had to get up to go into the tiny sitting room to have to watch it). But the large bathroom was superb with a big bath tub and a big shower to make you doubly clean! A lack of residents’ lounge facilities (the only place for residents to sit is in the bar, which can be smoky, noisy and cramped) is another minus, but it’s the food and the atmosphere that you are really going for here.

Breakfast was a very civilised affair, with nice touches such as a buffet containing fresh and stewed fruits, croissants, cereals, local organic yogurts and juices, just to get you in the mood for a cooked ‘Full Welsh’ (lavabread included), or smoked salmon and scrambled eggs – and all local ingredients, of course.
